Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. On May 18 & 19, 2019, Toastmasters Korea held its annual conference where finalists from all over South Korea gathers to compete against each other at the speech contest finals. During the conference, you can also find an education workshop you might be interested in, usually organized by fellow Toastmasters.

Presenting a Project

The workshop I run at the conference was only a small part of a larger education session that I normally do for corporations due to time constraints. For this conference, I’ve chosen the topic “Presenting a Project” since it’s relevant to, well, basically everyone. It’s something that everyone does, or has to do, at least once or twice in their lifetime. Even if you haven’t presented a project yet, it highly likely that you’ll present one in the near future. Also, from the feedback I received after the workshop, most of the participants appreciated the topic.

Participant-centered Workshop

There were mainly 3 parts in the workshop, and all the activities were participant-centered. The first part consisted of vocabulary and grammar exercises that provided the necessary infrastructure for the following parts. Next, the participants worked on a sample presentation script of a project. This allowed them to visualize how to use the vocabulary they’ve learned previously and helped them recognize the overall structure. At the final stage, they wrote down their own script about a project they were currently working on or the sample project that I’ve provided on the slide. Unfortunately, only one participant was able to give their presentation in front of everyone because we run out of time.

We’re hoping to provide more of these participant-centered workshops in South Korea in the near future. Please let us know if you, or your institution, are interested in our workshops.
